The translator’s job is carried out under various guises and in different environments. Some translators are employed in institutions or in the public sector. Others are in the employment of private companies that occasionally have an internal translation department. In both cases, when the “in-house” workload becomes too heavy, the company may opt to outsource some projects to external self-employed translators or translation companies.

Translation companies currently tend to employ few in-house translators. They mainly commission the services of self-employed translators, who are also known as “freelance translators”. In certain cases, translations carried out “externally” are reviewed by “internal” translators assuming the role of “revisers”. Furthermore, the scale of certain translation projects sometimes also requires the translation company to use external “revisers”, also working in a self-employed capacity.
